Yesterday was St Patrick’s Day and with Puerto del Carmen being the most popular resort for Irish visitors, the celebrations do not disappoint.
The day starts off with the traditional Gaelic game of Hurling on the main beach.
Then there is a parade which starts along the Avenida de las Playas and ends in the Old Town Harbour where there is a huge party with live music through the afternoon until late evening.
Everyone is encouraged to wear Irish themed hats and clothing and there is an abundance of green amongst the vast crowds.
There is a fantastic atmosphere and all nationalities join in the fun!
The continuation of the refurbishment of Puerto del Carmen is evident with a new project which will enhance the areas near Los Pocillos between Calle Noruega and Avenida de Italia at the cost of 1.5 million euros by the council of Tías.
The project which has already been proposed contemplates the elimination of barriers as well as a cycling lane between Los Pocillos and the vicinity of Playa Grande covering 750 meters.
In addition there will be more green areas added to the beach road of Puerto del Carmen without taking away any of the much needed existing parking spaces.
The works are likely to coincide with other improvements to this popular resort already announced. The understanding is that the work should be completed within a five month period.
As one of the oldest and most developed resorts, Puerto del Carmen still has pockets of undeveloped land. One of the reasons is that a lot of this land is privately owned and the council of Tias is unable to make any improvements to these areas to introduce new facilities for the public. However, the council is about to recieve 8,508 square metres for commercial developement. The area will be between the roundabout at Rancho Texas towards the first developements moving towards the town. The area will be used for to parks and green areas and the rest of the surface will be for streets, sidewalks and infrastructure.
Family holidays give you that special chance to spend some quality time together. Its a time when parents, grandparents and grand children can be under the same roof in a relaxed atmosphere. Villa holidays are good for offering relaxation for the older members of the party and a private pool for the kids to splash around in. It can be a worry though if there are very young children in the party and no matter how much you try to relax you need to keep your eyes open with regard to the dangers of having a swimming pool in your garden. Lanzarote Villa Choice have put together a seletion of villas with gated pools for those of you that worry about the danger and can have some piece of mind knowing that the pool cannot be accessed so easily by the toddlers. You can take a look at some of these vilas by clicking here

The main beach road in Puerto del Carmen known as the strip stretches from the old town harbour to the airport. The real name for the road is Avenida de las Playas which translated means Avenue of the beaches. Its 6 km follows the coastline from the main big beach in the centre of the new town through to the beaches of Los Pocillos and Matagorda. It is a hive of activity with everything you could possibly want from a resort lined up for you to take advantage of. We have a video of one of our trips along the seafront taken in December. Just look at the weather!

Regular travellers to Puerto del Carmen will have noticed a major refurbishment taking place over the summer in the commercial centre of Central Atlantico on the main beach road. A large part of the upper level has been taken over by O`Reillys irish bar taking over the space that was once occupied by 3 bars. This bar is popular for breakfast, lunch and evening meals.
